Georgia football: Players to watch this Saturday versus Austin Peay
WRs – Demetris Robertson, Ahkil Crumpton and Jeremiah Holloman
Of course Demetris Robertson is on this list. He made the list the second the NCAA cleared him to play this year for the Dawgs. Robertson sliced up Pac-12 defenses in 2016 with 50 catches for 767 yards as a true-freshman. True, the SEC defenses are a different beast entirely, and he is coming off an injury.
But he’s one of the fastest players in the conference, a great athlete and he has great hands. If he runs his routes well, he can get open against any SEC defense. His job is also made easier by being part of a great group of receivers, headlined by Terry Godwin, Mecole Hardman and Riley Ridley. Godwin isn’t playing this week, and Robertson has the same skill set as Godwin. Expect him to take the seniors place for the weekend.
The receiving corps isn’t limited to those four stars though, there’s also a pair of second-year players who’ll emerge this week. Ahkil Crumpton is the first that comes to mind. The junior college transfer mostly played on special teams last year, though he began to appear more-and-more as the season progressed.
He began 2018 by taking a huge step up as a leader, and he’s projected to receive a lot of playing time this year. Crumpton is a lot like former UGA receiver Isaiah McKenzie. He even took McKenzie’s number. If he can just produce half of what McKenzie did in his last year as a Bulldog, Crumpton’s short Georgia career can be considered a success.
The other receiver is sophomore Jeremiah Holloman. The former four-star ranked no. 125 overall by 247 Sports in 2017 has spent a year in Athens learning the playbook and style of SEC football. He debuted in the 2017 G-Day Game with an impressive performance, but was dormant all last season. I expect him to become a star in 2018. His, Crumpton’s and Robertson’s stock will all rise this Saturday with big games against Austin Peay.
MLB – Monty Rice
Is there any defender more hyped up that Monty Rice. Since the spring, all we’ve heard is that he could step into Roquan Smith’s roll easily to become the new superstar inside linebacker at Georgia. What more can I say to get you to focus on watching him this Saturday? We are all curious about his potential.
