18 true freshman saw the field Saturday for Georgia football versus Austin Peay. 17 of them are on scholarship while the other is a walk-on.

The first ever no. 1 recruiting class in Georgia football history is present and accounted for in Athens. 18 members of that class saw the field Saturday against Austin Peay, many of them received valuable playing time. Here were the five best freshmen who made their Georgia football debuts this past Saturday.

1. QB – Justin Fields

Fields certainly lived up to expectations in his first outing. He only tossed eight passes, but seven of them ended in a completion, for a total of 63 yards with one touchdown. He also carried the ball three times for 11 yards. His longest play was a 17-yard run after waiting in the pocket and finding no one open.

It is that patients that should excite fans. He is not a scrambler who looks to run immediately. He scans the field to find a receiver, and only runs when nothing is open. And when he runs, he uses his agility to make defenders miss, and his size to gain extra yards on the defenders he can’t avoid.

Fields began to prove why he was the no. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2018 class and I expect him to continue to do so tomorrow night against South Carolina. He might not start any games this year, but I believe he can be counted on when the Dawgs need him, based off what I saw last Saturday.
