Georgia Football blows out South Carolina 41-17
The Georgia Football team put the SEC and the rest of college football on notice when they blew out South Carolina 41-17
What was that about guarantees? The South Carolina Gamecocks came into this game with some pretty big talk. The number 23 ranked team in the country boasted a lot about how they were going to beat the Dawgs this week. They talked about how they didn’t know UGA’s cornerback Deandre Baker. None of that stopped them losing 41-17 to a team that might actually be quite good.
The Dawgs fittingly scored the first touchdown on a Baker interception. Baker picked a tipped ball from Jake Bentley and returned it 59 yards for the touchdown. Well, except he didn’t return it exactly 59 yards. He actually dropped the ball 1 yard short and linebacker Juwan Taylor made the heads up play of recovering the ball. Truth be told, I’m still not entirely sure who scored, but it set the stage for quite the UGA performance.
On the following drive, Tyler Simmons, D’Andre Swift, and Mecole Hardman ate up 75 yards in just 3 plays and finished the drive with Swift scoring on a 17-yard run. This was the moment where the team wobbled a little bit. South Carolina scored on an 11 play 75-yard drive and Jake Fromm was intercepted on the following possession. But the UGA defense held the Gamecocks on a 4th down attempt on the UGA 33 yard line and the Dawgs kicked on from there.
Rodrigo Blankenship kicked a field goal just before halftime and then came out of the blocks firing after the break. They scored touchdowns on each of their first three drives of the second half, building up a 41-10 lead that was never going to be relinquished.
Overall, it was a total team effort. Elijah Holyfield was the lead running back with 76 yards, but he, Swift and Brian Herrien all had touchdowns. Jake Fromm threw for 194 yards and completed 15 of 18 passes for a touchdown. Six catches and 103 yards of that went to Mecole Hardman, who is starting to make this whole receiver thing look easy.
So the Dawgs move to 2-0 and win their first SEC game in style. They’ve fired a shot across the bow to the rest of the conference and let them know that the 2018 Dawgs might be pretty good. We’ll have more in-depth analysis over the next few days, but for tonight, its time to celebrate so GOOOOO DAWGS!!!
