5: Richard LeCounte looks ready for primetime

Deandre Baker wasn’t the only player who stood out to Georgia fans in the secondary. Richard LeCounte is a player that many have been expecting to step up this year. He’s a guy that came into Athens with a lot of hype in part because of his personality, not just his skill on the field. LeCounte has also received a lot of tough love from Kirby Smart who used to play the same position as he did back during his playing career.

Yesterday, we saw the player that Smart and fans were hoping would emerge. LeCounte led the team with 10 tackles, 7 of which were solos. He played centerfield really well and did a great job of preventing any SC gains becoming big chunks. Smart has often asked for consistency from LeCounte and that’s what I saw watching the game yesterday. The light seems to have come on and that is really exciting.

Not only did he cover the backend, LeCounte was close to having his first interception for the Bulldogs. In one of the most athletic plays of the season so far, he came just a whisker away from an amazing pick. 99.9% of the safeties out there don’t stand a chance on this ball. LeCounte almost pulls off a miracle.

I doubt that is going to be the last chance LeCounte has for a pick this season. Throwing the ball anywhere is going to be a very serious risk for QB’s because, between him and JR Reed, the Dawgs look comfortable on the back end of their defense. That’s exactly what Kirby Smart wants and I’m sure he’ll find the time to give LeCounte a little pat on the head today for a game very well played.
