Georgia Football has brought back former Bulldog and NFL lineman John Theus to be a student assistant and that is only going to help their offensive line.

Kirby Smart continues to find ways to improve his coaching staff. Georgia Football fans are aware of the deep backroom staff that Smart has built during his time in Athens. The level of support that the program now offers Georgia’s players is second to none. Smart is always looking for ways to bring in people who can help his team win. 247sport’s Jake Rowe had a report yesterday about another piece that Smart has brought back to work with the 2018 team.

John Theus was a 5-star tackle when he arrived in Athens. He spent four seasons and 53 games playing for the Bulldogs before getting drafted by the 49ers. Theus decided to retire this offseason and has returned to Athens to complete his undergraduate degree. That has given Smart the opportunity to bring Theus in as a Student Assistant who can work with his team this season. It’s the same role that Kevin Butler had the past two seasons when he worked with place kickers.

Theus has been working with an offensive line loaded with talent. He doesn’t seem to have an official role, but he is stepping in and helping where he can. Smart told reporters:

"“He’s been there, done that, he’s played at a high level and he’s really good for our kids to be around someone who has been successful in this league who has also gone on to play in the next league so he’s been a big asset for us. We appreciate him doing it because he doesn’t have to.”"

Rowe also reports that it was Sam Pittman who went to Theus and brought him back into the football program. Having initially just wanted to focus on his schooling, Theus needed a little persuasion to bring him back into the football program. Having played at a high level in Athens and got a few years experience in the NFL, there is little doubt that Theus can help the current linemen. He’s seen and faced a whole lot of things that can help our young players grow.

Next. Dawgs will turn to youth his week. dark

Theus has only been in this role for a few weeks now, but hopefully, as the year goes on, we’ll begin to hear a bit more about the impact that he’s having. His recruitment is another move from a Georgia coaching staff that keeps looking for ways to improve. Both Smart and Pittman deserve a good deal of credit for continuing to bring in people who can help their guys get better.
