Georgia Football: Five Takeaways from the Middle Tennessee game
Receivers, Receivers everywhere:
We knew that Georgia was going to be good at the wide receiver position this year. Terry Godwin was expected to once again be the veteran leader of the group. Mecole Hardman and Demetris Robertson might be the two most explosive players in the country. Riley Ridley has shown that he’s a safe pair of hands when needed.
But those aren’t the only wide receivers making waves. Jeremiah (or J.J.?) Holloman was earmarked to make an impact in Athens back when he joined in 2017. From a physical standpoint, he’s got the lot, but he had dealt with some injuries and been pushed back a bit down the depth chart. But three catches and a TD on Saturday changed that narrative and catapulted him into the spotlight. He looks like another weapon when Georgia needs one.
Then there is Tyler Simmons. You can look far and wide and I’m not sure you’ll find a better blocking receiver in the entire country than Simmons. His blocking has set the edge for multiple TD’s this season but he’s got talent with the ball in his hands as well. We saw that when he turned a jet sweep into a 56-yard touchdown. Simmons has yet to break through as a pass catcher, but when you see that TD, it becomes clear that he’s a lot more than just a blocker.
In short, this group is LOADED. I haven’t even mentioned Jason Stanley who scored a touchdown on a great route but mainly sees time on special teams or Matt Landers who impressed a lot of people back in camp. This might be the best receiving corp in the country and with the QB’s UGA has, that makes for a very dangerous offense.
