Georgia football: 30 greatest players of the Mark Richt era
By John Buhler
- First-Team All-American (2011)
- First-Team All-SEC (2011)
- Second-Team All-SEC (2012)
Bacarri Rambo was one of the better ballhawks in the Georgia secondary during the Mark Richt era. Always looking to make a big play, he naturally became a fan favorite in Athens. It only helped that his name was Bacarri Rambo. Awesome name. Dawg Nation sure loved getting fired up when he came away with an interception or forced a big pass breakup.
Rambo joined the Dawgs in 2009 out of Seminole County High School in Georgia. As a freshman, Rambo played in 11 games, where he had 25 total tackles and two interceptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. He would build on that freshman season where he carved out a rotational role with three excellent years after that as a starter.
In an expanded role in 2010 as a sophomore, Rambo set collegiate highs in total tackles with 82 and tackles for a loss of yardage with 5.0. He would also see an uptick in his ballhawking ways with three interceptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Though Georgia stumbled to a forgettable 6-7 campaign in 2010, Rambo’s best season as a Dawg would coincide with the team’s first trip back to the SEC Championship since 2005 in 2011. As a junior in 2011, Rambo could not have been a better ballhawk in the SEC. He had eight interceptions for 157 yards and a touchdown.
He would be named First-Team All-SEC and a First-Team All-American by several publications, including the Associated Press. During his breakout junior campaign, Rambo was seen as the second best safety football after unanimous All-American Mark Barron of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Rambo would return to Athens for his senior season in 2012, but his production would dip a bit. He only appeared in 10 out of 14 games that year. Though he had 73 tackles and the only quarterback sack of his UGA career, the interceptions were less than half when compared to the year prior. Rambo had just three picks for 44 yards and no trips to pay dirt in his final year with the Dawgs.
Overall, Rambo would play 47 games over four seasons in his Georgia football career. He finished with 235 total tackles, 7.0 for a loss of yardage and 16 interceptions for 293 yards and three touchdowns. He would twice be an All-SEC team member at Georgia, earning Second-Team All-SEC in 2012.
Rambo was a sixth-round pick by the Washington Redskins in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent part of two seasons in the nation’s capital, as well as time with the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins. He is currently a free agent, having last been a member of the Bills’ preseason roster in 2017.
