Georgia Football: I’ll take Fromm over Lock in any shootout

When Georgia Football takes on Missouri today it will be Jake Fromm not media darling Drew Lock who is the best QB on the field.

Some might say that this is my fandom kicking in but I’ve never been the biggest fan of Drew Lock. The Missouri Senior has thrown the ball all over the field during his time in the SEC. The standard belief is that he’s the best QB in the SEC and could potentially be a first-round pick next April. In almost every game that he plays this season, Lock will be the best QB on the field. His team needs him to be that guy and give them a chance to win each week.

Things will be different today. Jake Fromm is much more than the game manager that some people seem to picture when they hear his name. He’s never going to throw for the 3900 yards and 44 TD’s that Lock threw for last year, but he doesn’t need to. Fromm plays on a well-balanced team and doesn’t need to pass for 4TD’s a game and 400 yards to win. He just needs to be efficient and that is something he excels at and isn’t as easy as people think.

Lock has already reached 1000 yards in just his first 3 games and Fromm is yet to throw for 500. However, Fromm has only played 56% of UGA’s snaps so far and is yet to play in a 4th quarter this season. Even as just a sophomore, Fromm is the more efficient QB and makes fewer mistakes. He’s 5th in the country this year in efficiency compared to Lock at 14th. Fromm is also completing an astounding 80% of his passes so far this season.

Fromm has been pushed to improve this season by the arrival of Justin Fields and he’s grown as a result. During the limited time that he’s seen the field, he’s clearly shown that he’s even better than he was last season. It was against Missouri last year that Fromm had his coming out party and threw for 326 yards, his highest mark all season. The question this year is does he need to throw for as much this year?

Missouri needs Lock to ball out if they are going to win this week. Georgia on the other hands has a dominant running game to lean on as well as Fromm. While it’s very likely that Lock will have the more gaudy stats when this game is over, that doesn’t make him the better QB. Fromm will execute the game plan UGA’s coaches have put in place and he’ll be efficient while doing it. I know which QB I want going into this game.

Next. What to watch today. dark

Fromm has more talent than a lot of people seem to think. He’s got the arm, leadership, and intelligence to one day play on Sundays himself. He’ll never put up the stats at UGA that Lock has, but for me, he’s already the better of the two QB’s. That’s something I fully expect him to prove today when the two meet on the field for the final time.
