Georgia Football: five takeaways from Missouri victory
The Georgia Football team managed to get the win over Missouri yesterday and here are our five takeaways from their performance.
Injury bug hits and not at a good time
The Georgia Football team was rather lucky with injuries last year. Things seem to be going in the opposite direction in 2018. Having lost Zamir White and Divaad Wilson to ACL’s for the year before the season started, the Dawgs are now dealing with some niggling injuries that have started to crop up during games.
Andrew Thomas was once again knocked out of this game after he was rolled up on. There is no indication that it’s a serious injury, but the Dawgs do not look like the same offensive line without Thomas in. There’s still a big gap between Thomas and Cade Mays who is physical but struggles in pass protection and gave away a mindless penalty today.
Losing Ben Cleveland could hurt as well. He’s become one of the SEC’s best guards but could be out for a while after leaving the game today. Fortunately, UGA is deep at guard and this could be an opportunity for Jamaree Salyer or Trey HIll to get some playing time. Still, it’s unlikely either can be as good as Cleveland is right away. The Dawgs much hyped offensive line doesn’t look as good without Thomas and Big Ben. They also don’t look so good blocking on the outside without Tyler Simmons who got hurt this week as well and could miss 2-3 weeks.
Then we saw the defense get a little banged up as well. Tyson Campbell looked great early in the game but ended up leaving due to a stomach bug. The secondary play dropped a bit without him in there and Missouri picked on Tyreke McGee again and again which was concerning. DeAndre Baker was also hurt and missed some snaps and Monty Rice missed the whole game due to an injury.
In short, the Dawgs are just struggling a bit right now with some injuries. Of all the ones mentioned, Cleveland’s is the only one that we don’t know about in terms of timetable. His might be serious, we don’t know but the others are all just niggles. Still, too many of those forced UGA to go much deeper into its depth chart this week than it would have liked which should help explain why they just weren’t as sharp as they were in previous weeks.
