Georgia Football has been considered RBU for a long time. This weekend, however, we saw three of the most recent graduates at that position could all be stars in the NFL for some time to come.
News flash people- UGA can turn out some pretty good NFL running backs. Three guys that were all great Georgia Football players had huge days in Week 4 of the NFL season. Let’s take a quick look at how three of the biggest names in Georgia football history performed this week.
Todd Gurley.
Just a typical day at the office for the best running back in the NFL. In a game that was highlighted by the 5 touchdown performance of Rams quarterback Jared Goff and multiple Rams receivers gaining over 100 yards, Gurley still did Gurley things. He ended the day with 83 yards and a highlight reel touchdown reception in which he made the defender look silly.
Sony Michel.
It didn’t take the Rose Bowl hero and 1st round pick of the New England Patriots long to show that was a good pick, did it? He had his 1st of many big days as a rookie in only his 4th game as a pro. He finished the day with 112 yards and his first NFL touchdown (complete with the Sony “jazz hands”). These are good numbers but are even more impressive considering he had to split carries with James White, the back who scored 3 TDs in the Patriots epic come from behind Super Bowl win over the Atlanta Falcons (and should have been named the MVP of that game).
Nick Chubb.
Carlos Hyde seemed to be the clear cut #1 running back in Cleveland for some reason. Nick Chubb seems to have been ignored not only by the fans in Cleveland on Hard Knocks but by his own coaching staff since arriving in Ohio. He was getting all of 3 carries a game in the first few games this season. Well, Chubb once again only got three touches in the game against the Raiders, only this time, he wasn’t getting smacked at the line of scrimmage. You see, the thing about Chubb is that if you give him a hole to run through, he’s got the ability to do this:
Of course, that one run wasn’t enough to encourage the Browns to give Chubb the ball again. Instead, they turned back to good old Carlos Hyde, that guy who kind of sucked at the 49ers for four years. Then, after letting him do nothing for nearly half the game, the Browns decided that maybe they should give Chubb one more carry, just to see what could happen. And of course, Chubb being Chubb ran for ANOTHER touchdown. Maybe the guy deserves more than three touches a game? Just a suggestion.
Fellow rookie Baker Mayfield made plays in his first career NFL start, but the two long TD runs by Chubb was perhaps the highlights of the game. He gained over a hundred yards on only 3 carries. Chubb and Mayfield have instantly turned the Browns from the joke of the NFL into a team that’s actually worth watching. Of course, the Browns lost in overtime because they’re the Browns and Hue Jackson is still their head coach. But who cares, maybe Chubb will get five touches next week, we’ll just have to wait and see!
