The Georgia Basketball team has been recruiting really well since Tom Crean arrived in Athens. He won another battle this week for SF Toumani Camara.
Tom Crean is yet to coach a game in Athens. He has however already made a real impact since arriving at UGA. It’s been a long time since the Dawgs have had a basketball coach who seems to have attacked the job quite as hard as Crean. The guy seems to have been working his socks off for the past six months.
That led to him closing out the 2018 class with a couple of late commitments. Since then he’s been working hard on the 2019 class and yesterday he got a commitment from his second recruit of the year. Toumani Camara is a 6-6 small forward from Florida who has the length to become a decent wing in Crean’s system. He’s stronger at playing defense and a solid rebounder more than a scorer right now. Still, there is a lot of room for development in Camara who is pretty raw despite now being an 18 year old.
Jake Rowe of 247sports reports that Camara is a high IQ player who currently has a GPA of 3.5. That should fit in nicely with Crean who does like players who can learn and understand different defenses and schemes. Camara will fit in nicely with a wide variety of wings that Crean has brought in. If there is one thing you cannot have too many of in college basketball in this day and age, it’s wing players.
The Dawgs should start Rayshaun Hammonds at small forward this year and Crean’s other 2019 commit is Jaykwon Walton who also plays the same position. Both Hammonds and Walton are more advanced than Camara and offer better scoring potential but Crean will want depth here. Versatile players like Camara can move around and play different spots which will certainly help when playing SEC teams.
