Georgia football: best performers from the win over Florida
Malik Herring
Malik Herring’s name wasn’t called that much, but I’m sure Kirby Smart will find a lot of reasons to praise the sophomore in film study. When Florida dominated Georgia on the ground early in the game, the coaches searched for personal groups and anything else to slow down the Gators. Herring proved to be an answer on the defensive line.
His usage increased as Florida’s run game became less potent. The Gators were no longer picking up large chunks of yards on the ground and they helped Georgia pull away late. Herring also shed a blocker on one play in the first quarter to put some pressure on Felipe Franks. That play resulted in the Tyrique McGhee interception. And Herring made the hit on the option play that nearly resulted in another turnover.
Expect to see Herring’s playing time increase, especially since the Dawgs play Kentucky this week. The Wildcats have one of the nation’s best tail backs in Benny Snell.
Deandre Baker
Statistically, Deandre Baker didn’t do anything besides make one tackle. But as a cover cornerback, that’s a good thing. As always, Baker completely locked down his area. Franks rarely risked throwing the ball his direction. For a while, that was the only thing Georgia had going for them. But it was enough. He limited Franks’s options which led to the interception by McGhee. And he kept Florida from being able to pass their way back into the game. That’s why he’s an All-American.
Tyrique McGhee
Like Holloman on offense, Tyrique McGhee will always be a Georgia hero for his performance against the Gators. Two turnovers, an interception and a strip on the goal line. Unfortunately, Georgia’s offense only got three points out of those turnovers. But there’s nothing McGhee can do about that, he made his plays.
