Georgia Football being 6th in CFP Poll doesn’t matter

Georgia Football came in at 6th in the first CFP poll last night but to be honest, it really doesn’t matter to UGA with so much football to be played.

This time last year, the Georgia Football program was put in the top four in the first CFP poll of the year. This time, they sit just outside of it in 6th place. Unsurprisingly, Alabama sits at the top in 1st place, followed by Clemson, Notre Dame, LSU, and Michigan. Kirby Smart made it pretty clear in his press conference yesterday that he doesn’t care about the rankings. He’s absolutely right to feel that way because right now, these rankings do not matter.

There is an awful lot of football to be played and a huge amount can change. Clemson and Notre Dame are both pretty much guaranteed to make it to the dance. Neither of them has a reasonable challenge left on their schedule and it would be a massive shock if either team doesn’t finish undefeated. However, the other two spots are definitely up for grabs because the SEC and Big 10 both have multiple teams fighting for the top spot.

Michigan is yet to play Ohio State and that game will decide which team the Big 10 can send to the playoff. The SEC has 3 teams in the top 6 of the rankings and I think we all know that this year, the committee is only taking 1 team from that group. After last years all-SEC final, it’s pretty safe to say that the committee isn’t going to allow that to happen again. Sure, fans in the south-east love it, but other parts of America don’t. There is zero chance the Big 10 gets left out again this year like they were in 2017.

So what do we know? Well, we know that whoever wins the SEC will be in the CFP. We also know that those three SEC teams all have to face one another to decide who ends up with the crown. Pretty sure we already knew that right guys?  I get why the CFP committee releases these early because it builds the hype for the playoff, but ultimately, nothing matters until December. All Georgia fans should be thinking about right now is getting past Kentucky and securing a second SEC East crown in two years. So thanks for the ranking CFP Committee, but truthfully, we really don’t care.
