Freshmen starting to find their feet:

Speaking of young players stepping up, I think it’s safe to say that Georgia fans can be excited for future seasons. This wasn’t an easy game from an injury perspective. The Dawgs lost Lamont Gaillard and D’Andre Walker early to injuries. Both should be fine but neither was able to return to the field and that left some big holes to fill.

Freshmen stepped in and did just that. Trey Hill had one mistake with a high snap, but other than that looked impressive. This was a true freshman stepping into a new position alongside two other freshmen and two sophomores. That has to be the youngest offensive line Georgia have fielded in a meaningful game in some time and they didn’t just survive. They kept Kentucky’s hyped up pass rush away from Jake Fromm all game and laid the foundation for a dominating run game. I mean these guys killed it against one of the best defenses in the country and they’re all still just kids. That’s frankly incredible.

The defense was no different. Brenton Cox finally recorded his first sack for the Dawgs and it was well earned. He, Walter Grant and Robert Beal all put together solid performances at OLB with Walker missing time. The same can also be said for Adam Anderson who looked incredibly explosive. Throw in Channing Tindall getting a sack himself and Otis Reese and Mark Webb stepping up in the secondary and this defense is starting to look dangerous. The speed at every position seems to be improving and you can see just how good this unit is going to be when these guys get settled.

Don’t forget, Georgia is the youngest team in the SEC this year. These players are going to get a lot better between now and next season after a full year in the S&C program and learning the schemes. It’s exciting to see them make impacts now because they’re all just scraping the surface of how special they can be. After their flashes, I hope that we continue to see more of them on the field next week against Auburn. The light is turning on and that is exactly what Kirby Smart has been wanting since June.
