While the commitment of 5-star OL Clay Webb would make most recruiting classes, for the Georgia football team, it’s just the start of a very busy few weeks.

It’s pretty good that moments like today seem like business as usual. With Kirby Smart now at the helm, the Georgia football team is recruiting like nothing before. Having brought in one of the highest ranked classes in history last season, they continue to hit the trail like madmen this year. It’s becoming increasingly hard to pretend that there is a better offensive line coach in the country right now than Sam Pittman. The top prospects in the country certainly seem to agree with that anyway.

Webb’s decision seems to be focused very much on Pittman. Much like we saw with Jamaree Salyer and Trey Hill last season, Pittman looms large. There do not seem to be many people that connect as well with top OL’s as he does. A lot of that likely has to do with his track record. In the 2018 NFL draft, two Pittman protege’s were drafted in the first round. This season, his unit showed development in every game and young and old players continued to get better under his coaching.

But this decision is about much more than just Sam Pittman. Once again, The Dawgs have 4 5-star commitments in the 2019 class. Two of those players, Nolan Smith and Travon Walker took to Twitter after his decision to announce that they were shutting down their recruitment process. While they had been committed, they were still talking to other schools. Now, they and Webb join Dominick Blaylock as 5-star players who are preparing for life in Athens.

Right now, Georgia sits 2nd in the 247 Composite rankings for their 2019 class. However, they still have plenty of room left to add to the 19 players that are committed to joining them. They are still in the running for several other 5-stars such as Trey Sanders and Jadon Haselwood but the Dawgs won’t stop there. Georgia is going to keep loading up on top players and push Alabama for the top-ranked class in the nation once again.

Maybe they get it or maybe they don’t but there is little doubt that Kirby Smart is going to finish with a top 3 class for the third year in a row. That’s an incredible achievement for a 1st-time head coach who has just finished his third season. This sort of recruiting performance is not normal for a coach not named Urban Meyer or Nick Saban and even they had previous stops where they learned how to be a head coach before raking in recruits like it was easy. The job that Smart continues to do on the trail is quite frankly unlike anything we’ve seen before in college football. So get your popcorn ready and settle in for some firework Dawg nation. I’d probably bet on a surprise or two before December is over.
