Georgia football will officially lose Justin Fields who is transferring to Ohio State. What does that mean for the program, and Fields going forward?

Well that it, it’s official. Justin Fields is transferring to Ohio State. The freshman QB who was once ranked as the top player in the 2018 recruiting class will leave his home state school after just one season. It’s a sad end to what many, including myself, once thought would be a fantastic career in Athens.

Despite playing quite a bit as a freshman, reports seem to suggest that Fields was never happy with his role on the team. A video surfaced after the South Carolina game of him complaining about not getting to do enough despite it being just his second game. I always thought that this was going to be a great fit if Fields was prepared to wait and be a part of the culture that Kirby Smart was building. That being said, I can’t criticize him for instead wanting to play right now. It’s his career and he’s got to do what he thinks is best. I can however criticize how the past month has been handled by Fields and the people around him. It’s been a bloody mess.

But Fields is moving on and so will Georgia. They already signed Dwan Mathis in the 2019 class and did so by flipping him from OSU so I guess that’s something. In some ways, the Dawgs and Buckeyes made a trade. Georgia sends their so called ‘generational talent’ with one years experience to OSU for a recruit that has better size but is very raw in Mathis.

So what does all of this mean for Georgia, Fields and the Buckeyes. Well with something as big as this, there are going to be ripples that will be felt across the board. We’ll start with the Georgia head coach, Kirby Smart who can learn some valuable lessons from how this whole situation went down.
