Georgia football got some good news on Saturday when they landed one of the top CB’s in the nation in Tyrique Stevenson.

Yes, Georgia may have missed out on the instate wide receiver that was committed to them for so long yesterday. Jadon Haselwood made his announcement to go to Oklahoma, but Georgia football ended up with one heck of a consolation prize. Tyrique Stevenson is one of the best cornerbacks in this year’s class. He’s another south Florida kid and he will join the likes of Tyson Campbell and Divaad Wilson in Athens in just a week.

Stevenson is a real talent. Not many corners come out of high school with the level of polish that he has. He’s not just an athlete who needs some work at the position. Tyson Campbell might be the best athlete on UGA’s team right now, but showed in his freshman season that he needed to work on his cornerback skillset. That’s totally normal for a freshman and I have no doubt that he’s going to make a big jump in 2019, just like Eric Stokes did this season.

But Stevenson is a different cat. When you watch his highlights, the guy already has a really solid CB technique. He knows what to do with his hands and turns his head around early to make plays on the football. What I like the most about his game is how physical he is in the initial 5 yards against a receiver. That’s exactly what Deandre Baker did over the past two years and receivers don’t like it because so few CB’s are physical these days.

I’d also encourage everyone to read Jeff Sentell’s recent article about Stevenson on Dawgnation. He’s a really good kid who is very focused on maximizing the opportunity that he’ll have in Athens both in the classroom and on the field. He’s the first person in his family to go to college and he wants to set a great example for his young sisters. That’s exactly the kind of person that Kirby Smart wants in this locker room and its why I think he’s such a great fit for UGA.

Next. State of the UGA program. dark

Stevenson is an early enrollee so he’s already signed his paperwork and will arrive in Athens next week. He’s a massive addition for the squad that will have to replace Baker, a surefire 1st round draft pick. That position group looks an awful lot better with Stevenson now a part of it and there’s a very good chance that he makes an impact in his freshman season.
