Georgia football received some good news on Sunday when JR Reed announced that he was returning to UGA for his senior season.
After ‘Black Friday’, when Georgia football lost 6 players from their 2018 team, Dawg fans received some good news on Sunday. JR Reed, their most experienced player in the secondary chose to return to Athens for his final season. He did so despite the fact that he has already received his degree and has been a starter for the last two season in Athens.
Reed’s return is big for Kirby Smart and Georgia. As a two year starter on the back end of the defense, Reed will be the captain for the 2019 defense. It’s highly unlikely that any player in that locker room will understand Kirby Smart’s defense better than Reed. Having him in that room for another year is just what this team needs.
Not only does Reed play well on the field, but the Dawgs need his presence in that DB room this season. With Deandre Baker now gone, they now have a huge amount of young talent, but very little experience. Eric Stokes looks likely to be the top CB next season, but he’s very limited in experience. He’ll be playing alongside the likes of Tyson Campbell, Tyrique Stevenson, Mark Webb, William Poole, Divaad Wilson and Chris Smith. All of these guys are incredibly talented, but very few of them have experience and so having Reed around them will really help.
It should also be a big help for Richard LeCounte. A lot of Georgia fans, including myself, have very high expectations for LeCounte who was a key cog in the 2017 recruiting class. He was inconsistent this year and that was to be expected, he’s still young. But Reed can help him get better and that’s what Georgia needs. With the defensive talent coming in the 2019 class, if this secondary can reach it’s potential, that side of the ball can be dominant.
