After shifts in the 247Sports rankings, Georgia football now has four players ranked no. 1 at their position. Three from high school, one from JUCO.

After a big senior season, Georgia football signee Travon Walker is now the no. 1 defensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The shift in the rankings also brings Walker up to no. 20 overall and the no. 3 player in the state of Georgia.

247Sports Composite previously had Walker ranked no. 22 when the rankings shifted this past Tuesday. He’s climbed 21 spots in the rankings since last January, and a whopping 27 spots since first entering the 2019 rankings on April 8, 2017 as the no. 47 player.

Walker joins Nolan Smith (weakside defensive end), Clay Webb (center) and Jermaine Johnson (JUCO weakside defensive end) as players ranked no. 1 at their position. Baring an unexpected fall from the top spot at this stage of the year, he’ll become the 10th no. 1 player to sign with the Bulldogs in the Kirby Smart era.

Unfortunately, the shift in the rankings was not as kind to a pair of Georgia signees. Offensive tackle Xavier Truss and quarterback Dwan Mathis both free-falled in the rankings. Truss entered the weekend ranked no. 144, but he’s now ranked no. 212. Truss has been on a steady decline since signing day last year when 247Sports Composite ranked him as the no. 40 player in America. But the drop he experienced yesterday is by far the biggest.

Based on his evaluation, pass blocking is likely the reason why Truss fell so hard. Those issues were probably highlighted in All-American Bowl practices. He should still do fine at Georgia, don’t expect this drop to affect how coaches feel about him. Georgia has an offensive line genius in Sam Pittman still on staff. The evaluation is still very high on Truss as a run blocker. And he will get to do that a ton at Georgia.

Mathis’s fall was almost as bad. He entered the weekend ranked no. 265 nationally. He’s now at no. 317. While Mathis has never been ranked that high (the highest 247Sports Composite ever ranked him was no. 198), he at least managed to hang around the mid-200’s for all of 2018. No reason can be found for his sudden drop.
