Georgia football already has an elite recruiting class in place after signing 23 players in the early signing period. But the coaches haven’t stopped recruiting for 2019.

Georgia football is in a very unique position with National Signing Day just two weeks away. After signing 23 players, seven of which in the top 50 nationally according to 247Sports Composite, the coaches only have one committed player that they’ll have to fight to keep (John Rhys Plumlee). That means, head coach Kirby Smart and his assistants can go all out on the small handful of players they’re still interested in.

A lot can happen in these two weeks. Georgia is fighting a war with Florida to sign no. 48 ranked cornerback Kaiir Elam. The battle for him has gone back and forth. Florida was the school for him when Georgia’s defensive coördinator Mel Tucker left to become the head coach at Colorado. Then Florida’s defensive backs coach Charlton Warren left to fill the same position at Georgia. And Florida wasted no time in filling that void with Torrian Gray, making sure the recruiting of Elam stays interesting.

Georgia apparently really wants Auburn commit wide receiver George Pickens. He committed to the Tigers in the summer of 2017, but he was silent through the 2018 football season as he was zoned in on helping his team win. Since the season ended, Pickens has taken several visits and many schools have visited him, including Georgia’s new offensive coördinator James Coley and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton.

Somehow signing both of them would mean Georgia would close the 2019 recruiting class with nine top 50 players, almost a tenth of that entire group. Nine top 50 players would match Georgia’s total from last season.
