Georgia football: best and worst case scenarios for National Signing Day
Best case
The true pie in the sky scenario. Plumlee stays with Georgia, Elam commits to the G, and Pickens flips from Auburn to Athens. Their signatures wouldn’t be enough to pass Alabama’s current class with their three top 10 players and only one three-star commit.
Having four scholarship quarterbacks would be huge for Georgia. Mathis and Plumlee will likely redshirt this coming season, but they’ll compete with each other very hard to make themselves and each other better for the team. Plumlee and Mathis are two different types of quarterbacks so that’ll be an interesting dynamic.
Elam gives Georgia another top-notch cornerback to join Tyrique Stevenson in the 2019 class. Georgia should be comfortable with Tyson Campbell and Eric Stokes starting next year, but Stevenson and Elam will both be factors next year, especially in nickel and dime defenses.
Pickens flip to Georgia will supplant the loss to Jadon Haselwood. Pickens isn’t quite as athletic, but he’s big, can run routes well and is excellent after the catch. He already has SEC size and would certainly be a factor as a true freshman.
Realistically however, Georgia will only get one of those three, Kaiir Elam. Plumlee wants to start ASAP and enter a system where he’ll flourish. Mississippi State And Auburn are his most likely destination. Pickens has been an Auburn commit for over a year and is really on taking visits because he didn’t take any during his high school playoffs. Auburn recently sent their whole staff for an in home visit. But Elam reportedly wants to play for coach Smart and coach Warren.
