Georgia football: The Bulldog’s first Super Bowl MVP, Jake Scott

Georgia football has multiple former players in this Sunday’s Super Bowl, including star running backs Todd Gurley and Sony Michel.

With two superstar running backs representing Georgia football on their respective teams this Sunday at the Super Bowl, there’s a good chance Bulldogs might see their fourth Super Bowl MVP crowned this weekend. Todd Gurley is the man on the Los Angeles Rams roster, while Sony Michel has been a touchdown machine recently for the New England Patriots.

But who was the first former Bulldog to win the Super Bowl MVP award? That was none other than safety Jake Scott. A player who’s been omitted from the Pro Football Hall of Fame for far too long, Scott was crucial for the Dolphins throughout his six years in Miami. But never was he more crucial than in Super Bowl VII where he intercepted two passes, returning one for 55 yards.

Neither of Scott’s interception were capitalized on by the Dolphins as they went three-and-out on the first trip. The last interception was wasted even more. The Redskins had driven all the way down to Miami’s 10-yard-line where Scott picked off Billy Kilmer and ran 55 yards to the Washington 48-yard-line. But even with the favorable field position, Miami’s drive stalled, their field goal was blocked, kicker Garo Yepremian tried to throw the ball, he had tiny hands, the Redskins grabbed the ball and ran it in for a touchdown.

But how the offense wasted Scott’s big plays doesn’t diminish them. Washington’s offense never scored on the Dolphins, and Scott’s two interceptions were a huge reason why. He was an easy choice for Most Valuable Player.

But Scott and the Dolphins weren’t finished yet. Although he didn’t win the MVP award in Super Bowl VIII he recovered two fumbles and the Dolphins offense looked much better in a 24-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Georgia is tied with Southern California for having the most players win the Super Bowl MVP Award with three players each. Scott was the first, followed by Terrell Davis. Hines Ward was the last to do so in Super Bowl XL. Maybe Todd Gurley or Sony Michel will be next this Sunday, at Super Bowl LIII.
