National Signing Day is this coming Wednesday, but it’s never too early to look at the prospects Georgia football is recruiting for 2020.

Georgia football isn’t just trying to unseat Alabama from the top of the recruiting world, the UGA coaches are trying to chip away the Tide’s dominance at several positions. Defensive line is one of the areas Alabama has dominated in the last decade. Commits like 2020 defensive tackle Jamil Burroughs, signees like Nolan Smith, Travon Walker and Bill Norton, and previous signees will help the Dawgs front-line reach Alabama’s level of depth and talent.

Another player who can help out is Myles Hurphy, the no. 2 strongside defensive end from Powder Springs, Georgia. 247Sports Composite also ranks him no. 13 overall and no. 3 in the state of Georgia. But who is the Hillgrove High School standout, and what would he bring to Georgia football?

At 6-5, 255 pounds, Murphy has SEC size for a 3-4 defensive end already. Though coaches might want him to bulk up a bit more, unless they plan on moving him to Jack linebacker. But that’s unlikely considering his style of play, which can be summed up in two words: bull rush.

Murphy is pure power, making him exactly what Kirby Smart wants from a defensive end. Coaches might even want him move to defensive tackle. He fires off the snap so quickly, he engages offensive linemen with all of the momentum and uses his powerful legs and arms to push them backwards. Any defensive line with him is going to make small pockets for any offense.

He is a bit raw in some areas. The coaches and scouts might want to see him develop more finesse in his block shedding so he can become a total package. But besides that, he is already a prototypical 3-4 defensive end, especially in the 3-4 multiple style Georgia plays. His effect stretches beyond pass rushing because he can help the rest of the defense get into the backfield on run plays. Combined with Burroughs, the future of Georgia’s defensive line can begin to take shape with Murphy. The Bulldogs just need to secure his signature after his senior season.
