Georgia football has a new addition to its backroom staff in Shawn Watson, the longtime offensive coordinator who has moved to Athens.

When Mel Tucker left to go to Colorado, he took a very important piece with him. Jay Johnson had become a crucial part of the Georgia football coaching setup. Johnson spent a lot of time working on game plan development and was a very important guy behind the scenes. Having been an offensive coordinator for some time before coming to Athens, Johnson brought a lot of experience to the role.

It was therefore not surprising to see Johnson follow Tucker to Colorado. Having been in the back office for a few years, I’m sure that he was excited to go back to calling plays, a role that he had for years elsewhere. With him moving on and the departure of Jim Chaney, UGA was looking for some new offensive minds and it was announced today that Kirby Smart has found one. He’s brought in Shawn Watson to take on Johnson’s old role of being an offensive quality control coach.

Watson brings extensive experience to the role. Much like Johnson, he’s been coaching for over two decades but he actually has even more experience than Johnson and more of a track record of success. Watson was involved in the development of Teddy Bridgewater back in Lousiville and was most recently OC at Pitt.

Watson isn’t a superstar up and coming coach. Much like Johnson, however, he’s an experienced hand who has seen a lot at the college level. He’s experienced success and failure and that experience should be very valuable on UGA’s staff. Kirby Smart is currently the oldest coach in Athens and he’s 42 years old. Having some old heads in the building certainly isn’t a bad idea and Watson is one of those.
