Spring football is right around the corner. In just 65 days, the Georgia football will split in two for the 2019 G-Day Game.

The highlight of any Georgia football fans spring is coming up in just 65 days on April 20. As fans, we’ll get our first looks at early enrollees like Dwan Mathis and Nolan Smith. Rising sophomores who are former blue-chip prospects like Adam Anderson and Kearis Jackson can begin taking the next step towards prominence. While Demetris Robertson, Jaden Hunter and other upperclassmen begin carving out their roles on a new team.

That’s why we love G-Day. We love watching guys reach for the brass ring in front of a packed Sanford Stadium audience. Whether they’re newcomers, second-year players who just needed a year, or upperclassmen at risk of being left behind by new prospects. Watching a spring practice culminate with new leaders emerging will never get old.

The 2019 G-Day Game may not seem as interesting as the last two, since there’s no quarterback battle to watch. Jake Fromm is the clear no. 1 guy for 2019. But I’d contest that this year’s game is even more intriguing. We’ll still have a quarterback battle, only for the backup position. We’ll get to see if Mathis can be trusted to lead the offense, or if we’ll need to redshirt him in favor of Stetson Bennett this season.

There’s also the wide receiver shuffle. Who’s going to join Jeremiah Holloman as one of Fromm’s top targets this year. Will Robertson, the former five-star, live up to his hype in year two in Athens. Can Jackson or Tommy Bush step up to fill the voids left after Georgia lost multiple receivers to the NFL Draft and graduation. What about Tyler Simmons or Trey Blount?

Where’s the pass rush going to come on defense with D’Andre Walker and Jonathan Ledbetter graduating. Will the former five-star Brenton Cox step up and become the star all the recruiting sites expected of him? How about the no. 1 overall prospect for 2019, Nolan Smith.

The storylines for this year’s G-Day are endless. The one’s I mentioned are just the biggest ones. There’s also the stable of inside linebackers and the possible debut of Zamir White. That’s the product of all the depth Georgia has built during the early years of the Kirby Smart era. Position battles in Athens have never been as close are they are today. As a result, G-Day Games have never been this intriguing.
