Georgia football is building depth on the defensive line through the 2020 recruiting class. One Georgia native at defensive end is climbing up the rankings.

Georgia football is looking to become a destination for players of all positions. But especially on the defensive line where the team wants to rotate upwards of nine players, each filling different roles besides starter and backup.

Georgia is a hot bed for talented defensive linemen this year with seven of the state’s top 25 prospects playing on the defensive line. Two of which are already committed to Georgia. The Bulldogs are hoping to add to that total with players such as Myles Murphy and B.J. Ojulari. Lately though, the name to watch has been Zykeivous Walker.

In today’s rankings shakeup at 247Sports, Walker jumped 33 spots to become the no. 99 player in the 247Sports Composite rankings and the no. 12 player in Georgia. Also ranked no. 5 among strongside defensive ends, Walker won Region 4-1A Player of the Year at Scheley County High School, helping lead the Wildcats to the state quarterfinals.

The question for all defensive ends who Georgia’s coaches are interested in is what role will they fill in Georgia’s 3-4 multiple defense. Is he an edge rusher? A defensive end who plays well beside a nose guard, or a defensive tackle? Who is Zykeivous Walker?

If he can improve his takeoff at the snap, Walker could crack the top 50 in every recruiting ranking. The rest of his game is there. He’s very difficult to block. Even when it looks like the offensive lineman has won the battle, he’s able to shake them off to get to the ball carrier.

Walker is surprisingly quick for a player of his size (6-4, 255 pounds according to 247Sports). When the direction of the play makes it seem like Walker won’t be a factor, he ends up near the ball carrier by the end.

Georgia’s coaches have a wealth of options when staying within the Peach State looking for a defensive lineman. His style is more power-based, so expect him to play in the interior if he comes to Georgia. That’s where most of the depth is needed anyways.
