Georgia Baseball is at the top of the SEC rankings after winning another conference series. This time it was against Vanderbilt, which catapulted the Dawgs to No. 2 in the country.

With Spring football practice getting kicked into gear and Georgia baseball over at Foley continuing to light it up there couldn’t be a better time to be a Dawg fan right now.

A season that started hot only continues to get hotter. Since entering Conference play the Dawgs have won twelve of their last 16 games and have a 9-3 record in the conference.

Two of those series coming against No. 9 LSU and No. 7 Vanderbilt in which the Dawgs came away with a series win.

Thanks to an impressive slate of wins in conference games and a non-conference game against No. 16 Clemson the Dawgs have now climbed their way up to the No. 2 spot in the rankings.

More from Dawn of the Dawg

That No. 2 spot is almost good enough for the best ranking in the entire SEC.

Coach Stricklin has put something extraordinary together in Athens, and his players have been showing up when needed most.

One of those players showing up when needed is the second baseman, LJ Talley.

He has posted a .364 batting average and five home runs. In most recent action, Talley had a .364 batting average and a home run in the series against the Commodores.

Playing right behind Talley is CF, Tucker Maxwell, who has put together a remarkable season up to this point. Batting .283 at the plate and driving in 26 runs has helped the Dawgs continue this hot streak as well as earn Maxwell the honors of SEC and NCAA Player of the Week this season.

Although the bats have been impressive for the Dawgs, it has been the pitching staff that has opened up some eyes.

Emerson Hancock and Tim Elliot have been a star duo down in Athens this season as starting pitchers.

Elliot who has an ERA of 1.04 and Hancock who has posted a 1.02 ERA have continued to mow down lineups night in and night out. Opponents currently are hitting <.150 against both pitchers and players have struck out 93 times against the two starting pitchers.

The list of pitchers doesn’t end with Elliot and Hancock. Teams when playing against the Dawgs have a batting average of .186 and a team ERA of 2.85.

To put those stats into perspective, the Dawgs as a team currently have a team batting average of .271 and opponents have an ERA of 6.12 when pitching against Georgia.

The season is far from over yet, but from the looks of it now UGA is looking to be a serious contender to become NCAA Baseball National Champions in 2019.

Georgia will continue conference play after a one-game series with Georgia Tech on April 9 at 7 p.m. ET on the SEC Network. Then the Bulldogs face off against Tennessee (23-10) April 11-13.

Then Georgia faces off with Clemson on April 16 for a midweek home game before hosting Missouri on April 18-20, the same weekend as the football team’s annual G-day game.
