Georgia Football: Can Jake Fromm win the Heisman Trophy?
Georgia Football’s last player to win the Heisman Trophy was Herschel Walker in 1982. Nearly 37 years later, does junior quarterback Jake Fromm have a legitimate chance to win college football’s top individual award in 2019?
2019 could be a very special year for Georgia football.
Kirby Smart’s team has been in the conversation as a national championship contender for the past two seasons, and that will continue into this upcoming season.
While there are a host of factors that can ultimately determine what type of season the Dawgs have in 2019, the play of junior quarterback Jake Fromm could be the most important one.
In two seasons at Georgia, Fromm has thrown for 5,376 yards and 54 touchdowns. He’s thrown only 13 interceptions and has an astounding completion percentage of nearly 65%.

Fromm has already solidified himself as one of the most talented and most successful quarterbacks in program history in only two seasons of play.
2019 could be an absolute monster season for Fromm as he takes control of the offense for a third consecutive season.
The Dawgs haven’t had a player win the Heisman Trophy since 1982, but Fromm has an opportunity to add his name to college football history this season.
The critics will say Georgia runs the ball too much for Fromm to have his name in the Heisman conversation. I would agree that has been the case for the last two seasons, but I expect 2019 to be different for two main reasons.
First, Fromm will have absolute freedom and control within the offense this season which will undoubtedly give him more opportunities in the passing game.
The coaching staff placed some limits on Fromm (particularly in 2017) that did not give him complete control of the offense and play calling.
That won’t be the case in 2019. Fromm also is now the established starter and won’t have to worry about looking over his shoulder to his back up like he had to do the last two seasons.
Second, newly promoted offensive coordinator Jim Coley’s offense is almost certain to be more balanced and have a lot more passing plays than the offense did during Jim Chaney’s tenure at Georgia.
The offense under Coley will be less predictable and more explosive, and he fully trusts Fromm to make any throw on the field.
Another reason Fromm has a shot at the Heisman Trophy in 2019 is that he plays on an elite team.
Historically, Heisman winners typically come from one of the nation’s top teams. Georgia is projected to make another appearance in the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff this season.
If the Dawgs live up to the expectations and Jake Fromm continues to progress as a star quarterback in the SEC, I fully expect him to get an invitation to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York in December.
