Georgia Football: 2019 Spring Quarterback Shakedown
Quarterbacks looking for a Spot on the Field
Georgia added two quarterbacks to the roster in the 2019 class, Dwan Mathis and the return of Stetson Bennet IV.
Not to mention there is walk-on quarterback John Seter on the roster as well.
I believe that both Mathis and Bennett could earn some playing time with the new redshirt rule. We may see Mathis in four games and then claim a redshirt for him.
Mathis is an early enrollee who has to grow some more into his big 6-6, 205-pound frame. He has to learn the playbook which may be a learning curve for him right now. However, he has a strong arm and will likely see the field a good bit in G-day, and sparingly in the fall.
I believe he knows that this year is a learning one for him and that he needs to be like a sponge and soak it all up and learn from Fromm while he’s here.
As for Bennett, I believe that he will be the second string quarterback for the Bulldogs. He left the program and transferred to Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi.
While in Mississippi, he threw for 1,840 yards and 16 touchdowns. Bennett added 148 yards and one score on the ground as well. He was a playmaker in Mississippi.
Losing Bennett was a hit to the program after he helped on the scout team prepare for so many opponents in the 2017 season. Now Bennett’s back and better than he was when he left months ago.
He brings experience to the table and knows this offense from being here. I believe that Bennett will be the second-string quarterback and we will see him in clean up situations.
We may see Bennett in other situations, but I think he will be the guy that comes in for Fromm after Georgia gets a big lead.
The Bulldogs have quarterbacks that can get the job done, especially QB1. After Fromm, the staff will have to learn to trust Bennett and maybe even Mathis to make plays and secure blow out victories for the Dawgs.
