Georgia Football desperately needs leaders for the 2019 season. There have been too many arrests this offseason for comfort, and the Bulldogs need people to step up and be the leaders of this team.

One of Georgia football’s most significant needs right now is leaders.

Six Bulldogs have gotten arrested in the last month, with Brenton Cox and Robert Beal being the most recent ones.

That many arrests are unacceptable for any program. How do you change this? Leadership is how you fix it, well one of the ways.

Three guys that I think need to step up and become the leaders of this team are D’Andre Swift, Charlie Woerner, and Monty Rice. These three need to be vocal leaders on and off the field.

Swift is in his third season as a Bulldog and has already proved he can be a dynamic runner. Now he has the opportunity to put it all together. On the field, he’s a superstar, but off the turf, he seems quiet and reserved.

However, instead of quiet I want to see him on the sidelines talking other players up and being a leader. Take young players on the offense and defense side of things and be their mentor.

Swift needs to be the guy these youngsters can go to about anything.

I’m not saying he isn’t already a leader, because he seems to be, but I want to see some vocal leadership out of him.

The same goes for Woerner, who is one of the seniors on this team. He has made some noise on the field, but for the last three years, almost four now, Woerner has had Nauta to be the leader in front of him, essentially be the face of the tight ends. Now he doesn’t have that and needs to step up in a big way.

I want to see Woerner and Swift become dynamic offensive leaders in 2019, and it starts now.

As for the defense, Rice is at a position Georgia needs leadership from, and badly. The linebackers, especially the inside backers, need to be vocal leaders on the field. They are usually the ones who are calling the plays out, making sure the formation right, as Roquan Smith did.

Rice is quiet, really quiet, but a force on the football field. Most of the arrests this offseason came from defensive players, and since he has been here three years, there is no reason he can’t help keep these guys in line.

I want to see Rice get in guys faces, be the leader and make sure guys do what they’re supposed to on and off the field. Rice is an upperclassman now and needs to show these young guys what it means to wear the red and black.

Georgia has plenty of guys that could step up and be leaders this season. These three guys are just who I would like to see step up and show the way. The Bulldogs need to find a player to help keep these young guys in check, shoot the whole team in check. In my opinion, it starts with these three.
