Georgia Baseball: Dawgs get swept but still very well alive
Georgia baseball fell to Mississippi State last week, but it is only a minor hiccup in this season’s success.
After going on a four-game win streak, Georgia baseball hit a rough slump when by following that win streak with a four-game losing streak on the baseball diamond.
A very rough three-game series against a reliable Mississippi State team that ended in the Dawgs getting swept may throw up some red flags to some fans especially after losing to the nerds for the Miss. St series.
Take a deep breath Dawg fans because Georgia is still in great shape to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
The first thing that needs to be noted is Georgia’s top pitcher Emerson Hancock did not pitch this last series as Coach Stricklin wanted to give Hancock a few days of rest.
Hancock currently has a 1.04 ERA, 77 strikeouts, and only has walked 15 batters this season.
It is safe to say that if you don’t have this guy in the rotation, then your pitching staff is going to take quite a step back.
Despite getting swept and dropping out of the top 5 in the rankings Georgia is still ranked second in their division behind Vanderbilt whom the Dawgs won the series against earlier this season.
I would match rather watch the Dawgs struggle at this point in the season and get those bad games out of the way now than in the SEC tournament or later in the season when games matter most.
Georgia was able to get right back in the win column after their one-game series against The Citadel where the Dawgs won 9-0. Cam Shepherd had a solid game bringing in three runs and scoring a run himself making a major contribution to the Dawgs offense.
Logan Moody also pitched a gem as he only gave up one hit in five innings with four strikeouts and one walk. The bullpen then came up and finished the game off by not giving another hit and sealing the win for Georgia.
Georgia currently sits on a 34-12 record ten games left in the season. Six of the games will be at home down at Foley Field so be sure to show out for the home stretch of the regular season Dawg fans!
The No. 8 Bulldogs have put together an awe-inspiring season up to this point, and by having Hancock back in the rotation, I would expect a very strong finish from the red and black.
Georgia will continue their regular season play this upcoming weekend against unranked Florida down in Athens.
Every conference game is a big deal but these next three SEC matchups for the Dawgs will be crucial if they want a good seed in the SEC tourney to set them up for a deep run in the NCAA baseball tournament.
