Georgia Football: Say Hello to the Dawg’s No Fly Zone
Since head coach Kirby Smart took the job, Georgia football’s secondary has improved each season. Now the Bulldogs have some of the most talent in that position.
With the 30th pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the New York Giants select, Deandre Baker, cornerback from the University of Georgia.
Baker has set the standard for Georgia football secondary players, and it is time for the young guys to step up this year.
I don’t expect a repeat of Baker’s incredible college stat of not giving up a touchdown in over two years though if someone were to follow in Baker’s footsteps, I would have no problem at all with that.
If I had to pick a secondary starting lineup at the moment, I would say it will Eric Stokes Jr., Tyson Campbell, Tyrique Mcghee, Richard LeCounte, and JR Reed.
There is a mixture of guys who have minimal experience playing time-wise, but Smart has already proved to us that he can develop guys at the position.
There are other players like Otis Reese, Ameer Speed, Latavious Brini, and William Poole who could make appearances this season.
Coming into Georgia, Deandre Baker was a 3-star and ranked as the 657th best player in the nation.
Four years later Baker is one of the greats DBs in Georgia history and now a first-round draft pick.
Last year, the Dawgs had the 12th best passing defense in the nation with opposing teams averaging 180 passing yards a game.
Both Tyson Campbell, a sophomore, and Eric Stokes,a RS sophomore, both saw a good bit of playing time this past season. With the depth Geogia has had at the position, Smart hasn’t had to rush guys into the lineup.
The secondary unit putting in another offseason with Scott Sinclair’s weight training program and a full season spring and fall practices with Kirby these boys should be very polished come August 31st.
LeCounte is now entering his third year with the Dawgs up to this point has put together a pretty solid career including an excellent sophomore season.
In 2018, LeCounte racked up 74 tackles, an interception, and two forced fumbles as a Safety.
In Todd McShay’s latest 2020 NFL Mock Draft, LeCounte was projected to go in the first round along with teammates Andrew Thomas and Jake Fromm.
Right next to LeCounte is another stud Safety in JR Reed who last season had 66 tackles and also got to put on the “Savage Shoulder Pads” a few times himself.
Georgia has started to set the trend that they want to have one of the best secondaries in the country, and last year they showed that.
In 2019, Georgia has the perfect mixture of experience and young potential in the secondary. Despite taking a significant blow in losing Baker, I wouldn’t expect much of a setback.
There may be some early season struggles at the beginning of the season but come October those boys should be in great shape.
Georgia has all of the potential in the world in their secondary it’s just a matter of who can step up and make the plays.
I feel like a broken record when I say this because it seems to be a theme for the 2019 season, but it’s just the truth.
Georgia has a group of guys who can lay down the hammer on any given player at any given down. So a PSA for all opposing offenses keep your head on a swivel this season because the Dawg’s No Fly Zone is coming your way this season.
