NCAA football overtime madness
Basketball gets it right
Actually, all kidding aside, there is a reasonable overtime procedure, and it’s used all winter.
In basketball, overtime periods are extensions of the final period, usually half the length of a quarter – In high school, four minutes and in college, five minutes.
A college football overtime would simply be a 7.5 minute extension of the fourth quarter. To account for the advantage and disadvantage created by the kickoff, make it two four-minute periods so each team kicks off and receives at least once.
No, it’s not a new idea, juts the best idea.
In this scenario, between 16 and 22 plays can be expected. That’s not too taxing. If the game remains tied at the end of the second overtime period, just keep playing until someone scores.
Or, more logically, call it a tie and go home.
