The 2020 recruiting class is starting to heat up for Georgia football. Kirby Smart and his staff just secured the verbal commitment from one of the top prospects in the 2020 class overall. This young man’s decision was highly anticipated by many fans, programs, and recruiting analysts around the country.
Georgia football got some excellent news with Mekhail Sherman commitment was made public on May 9th. A week prior, Sherman had announced that he had narrowed his list down to two schools, Georgia and Ohio State.
Sherman is a high-end five-star prospect from St. John’s College High School in the Washington DC area. He seemed to be leaning towards Ohio State for a long time, but in recent months the Bulldogs turned the tide on that.
His primary recruiter at Georgia is outside linebackers coach Dan Lanning. Many believe that Sherman’s visit to Athens for the “G-Day” spring game was a final push for Sherman to lean towards and eventually choose the Bulldogs.
Sherman ranks as the 11th overall prospect in the nation and the #2 linebacker according to 247Sports. He is a top-level five-star recruit and a player that was sought after by almost every school across the country.
Fans should be excited about what this young player can bring to the Georgia program for several years starting in 2020. He is 6’3 and 235 lbs, which means he already has the college level size that teams are looking for from an outside linebacker these days.
Sherman, who was a junior that got a rare bid at the Opening in July, clocked in with a 40 yard dash time of 4.53, a great time for a linebacker and athlete with his size.
He is a well-rounded linebacker that can engage lineman and bring ball carriers to the ground, but all use his quickness to cover running backs and tight ends in the passing game. Sherman’s twitter bio even states ” Five-Star Defensive Hybrid” saying his importance in priding himself in being a versatile football player.
Here is a video of some of his highlights from his 2017 season. Just remember, this highlight video is showcasing just his sophomore season. Unfortunately, he missed most of his junior season to due to an ACL tear, but there are high expectations for his final season at St. John’s before he takes his talents to Athens.
Coach Smart and his staff are surely salivating at the idea of having Sherman lining up in their front seven for years to come.
Sherman will be stepping into a loaded position group at Georgia, but with his talent and ability, there is no reason to believe that he can’t carve out a role his first season in the red and black and eventually become an integral player for the Bulldogs defense.
We see him with the potential to be an NFL first-rounder, while future SEC quarterbacks and running backs will surely not want to see Sherman lining up on the other side of the line. Georgia fans should be excited about this young player coming in 2020, Kirby Smart and his staff secured a good one here.
