The Dick Howser Trophy is in its 33rd year, and it’s presented annually to the nations most outstanding college baseball player.
Two committees, the NCBWA, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce vote on the winner.
The award is given in memory of former FSU All-America shortstop and major league player and eventually manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. Most folks in the college baseball world regard this award as one of the most prestigious in college baseball.
To be considered for this award, the committees look at the on the field performance, leadership, moral character, and courage. These were things that Howser exemplified in his life.
Hancock made the semifinalist list last year as well. The finalists will be announced on June 6.
If Locey and Hancock keep up what they’re doing on the mound, it’ll be hard for them not to be in contention for these awards. Hancock could come home with two while Locey comes home with Pitcher of the Year.
