Georgia Football landed Jamil Burroughs last August, let’s take a look at what he brings to the table.
Jamil Burroughs is a 6’2″ 330 lb defensive tackle out of Powder Springs, Georgia. He committed to play Georgia football back in August of last year as part of the 2020 class.
Burroughs is just the third McEachren Indian to commit since 1999. The other two being fellow defensive tackle Julian Rochester and wide receiver Tyler Simmons.
According to 247Sports Composite, he is currently a 4-star recruit, the No. 241st overall, 24th DT, and 26th prospect in Georgia. In 19 games Burroughs recorded 89 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, six sacks, as well as one blocked field goal.
In an interview with 247Sports, Burroughs said he chose Georgia because they are close to home and because he believes they can help him with his future.
Burroughs would fill a much-needed hole in Georgia’s defense at nose tackle.
Last year Netori Johnson switched from the offensive line to the defensive line to fill this need. Johnson’s competing on the defensive line and working on earning some playing time this season.
Georgia has been thin at this spot since John Jenkins and John Atkins left the program. Rochester and Jordan Davis will likely rotate at this position in 2019.
Rochester is a senior and will be gone by the time Burroughs gets to campus. With him leaving this emphasizes the nose tackle position for the 2020 class along with the option to earn early playing time.
However, Burroughs and whoever else the Bulldogs add will have to compete with Davis for that starting spot.
Burroughs is a bit sluggish as a pass-rusher right now but could be a great addition in the run game. His thick body will allow him to take on double-team blocks, which will allow the linebackers to roam free and make plays.
This nose tackle position is vital to the 3-4 defense, especially on run plays, and I believe that Burroughs could be just the player this defense has been lacking in the middle. Georgia’s first goal on defense is to stop the run, and with a body of his size on the line, the Bulldogs should be able to stop opposing running backs.
The Dawgs defensive line has been one of its weaknesses for a couple of years now, and Burroughs could be a step in the right direction to making it a strength.
