In November, Matthew Boling was just another great athlete that signed a letter of intent with Georgia track and field. Now, he’s Superman.

In November, head Georgia track and field coach Petros Kyprianou argued that Georgia  signed the top track class in the country.

This month, Dawg signee Matthew Boling of Houston ended the argument, breaking the national 100-meter all conditions time with 9.98 effort, and later setting an official high school national record of10.18.

Boling has done a lot more, too, enough for Parker Jones of Mile Split to claim Boling is the best high school track and field athlete in America.

More from Dawn of the Dawg

Jones‘ detailed one weekend in the life of Mather Boling:

  • On Friday, March 15, Boling ran a 10.28 in the 100 meter prelims. He later anchored the 41.71 time of the Strake Jesuit 4X100 relay team.
  • On Saturday, he ran a 20.28 in the 200 meters for the top US time. He then returned to the 100 meter to run a 10.22

The good news for Georgia could have ended there, and the bad news begun as the local buzz had Boling considering a sponsorship offer to run professionally. If so, it was good news again when Boling released his track plans for the summer.

Summer plans lead to Athens

Boling plans to compete in the USATF U20 Championships and the Pan American U20 Championships.  Boling qualified to compete in the USATF 100 meter, 200 meters, and long jump, and had he chose to compete, it would surely signal he was seriously weighing the possibility of passing on college track.

Boling is just one of several outstanding Georgia track and field signees. In his bio released by the University of Georgia, Boling is listed running a 21.20 in the 200 meters and 46.15 in the 400 meters, ranking as the number two senior in the 400 meters.

And by the way, he may be a better jumper than sprinter. His 25′ 2” in the long jump is tops in the United states this season.

Boling also represented Team USA at the 2018 U-20 World Junior Championships and was runner-up on 4x400m relay team. In 2018, Boling claimed the Texas state 6-A long jump championship and was the 400m runner-up.

Transformational talent

Now, after his record-setting 100 meter performances and his near mythical performance anchoring the 4 X 400 relay in a Texas high school  meet, Boling is a cult figure in the track and field sprint world.

Transformational talent

About the 2019 recruiting class, head Georgia track and field head coach Petros Kyprianou said, “As a head coach, you can’t be happier and more eager for the new breed of Bulldogs.”

With the emergence of Boling as a once in forever talent, Kyprianou has more than a new breed of Bulldog. He has a chance to transform the Georgia track program.

Another Herschel?

Imagine a team member that can claim first place in four or five SEC Championhip events and three or four NCAA championship events. Imagine Georgia Track not just on the cover of Track and Field Magazine, but Time Magazine.

Think Herschel Walker’s transformation of Georgia football. That is what Petros Kyprianou is bringing to Athens in Mathew Boling.

Next. Dawgs need Kelee Ringo in the secondary. dark

As they say in Texas, “Pardnuh, we’re gonna need a bigger track stadium.”
