This whole Hail State – Hotty Toddy thing is a lot older than even football, not to mention Dan Mullen, but I guess it’s possible Mullen could have been involved.
The elite established the University of Mississippi to educate the elite. After the Civil War, Mississippi tried to establish agricultural studies in Oxford. Ole Miss resisted, and in 1878 Mississippi A&M, later named Mississippi State, was established a safe distance to the south.
“The primary differences between State and Ole Miss are not made by the policies or the faculties, but by the attitudes and beliefs of the people who enroll and support these universities.”
I suppose Dan Mullen’s great-great-granddaddy could have stood on the stage at the first Mississippi A&M convocation and shouted, “To Hell with Ole Miss.”
