The nation’s tenth oldest continuous rivalry

The awarding of the Golden Egg began in 1927 to avoid another 1926 like post game riot between fans. By then, State and Ole Miss had already enjoyed football hostility for over 20 years.

I suppose Dan Mullen’s great-granddaddy could have been there in 1926 packing a 16 gauge.

Dan Mullen’s Bowl of Eggs

The MSU – Ole Miss football game’s moniker, “The Egg Bowl”, was coined in 1977. Rarely seen film footage from 1977 exists of a five-year old at the family farm holding a bowl full of eggs and clearly saying, ”Egg Bowl!”

I suppose it could have been Dan Mullen.

Baseball’s long been there

Ole Miss and Mississippi State play a baseball game with a trophy that pre-dates Dan Mullen’s ascent to second grade, the Mayors Cup, now called the Governors Cup.

I suppose an eight year old may have thrown the first Ole Miss homerun back on the field, and I suppose it could have been Dan Mullen.
