Could Georgia Football make a run at DBU?
By Eric Taylor
Georgia football has a history of having weak secondaries. However, that looks like it is about to change.
Just last year Georgia football had its first Jim Thorpe Award winner, and it seems to be just the beginning of successful secondary players.
It seems every year Georgia is bringing in more and more highly touted 5-star defensive backs are headed to the Classic City.
Since 1999 Georgia has had 21 defensive backs taken in the draft. Only two of the 21 were in the first round, Champ Bailey and DeAndre Baker.
By comparison, in that same time, LSU has had 22 defensive backs taken in the draft, five of those were in the first round, and Florida has had 20 defensive backs taken in the draft, also with five in the first round.
The Bulldogs are gaining some ground on the two schools that have deemed themselves “DBU.”
However, they are not churning out first round picks like the other two.
Just this past year Baker was selected 30th overall in the NFL Draft, but that may not be enough. Both Florida and LSU have defensive backs that could go in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Georgia may not steal that title away this year, but they are lined up to fight for it over the next few years.
With guys like Eric Stokes and Tyson Campbell, the Bulldogs finally looks primed to compete for that title. If Baker, a three-star recruit, is any indication of what this coaching staff can do when it comes to developing secondary talent, then LSU and Florida should be careful.
Soon the NFL will be flooded with defensive backs from the Univerisity of Georgia. A position that was once a weakness has become a strength.
With a constant influx of talent, it seems like that is not changing in the foreseeable future. Will the Dawgs be able to knock off the current teams claiming DBU? Time will only tell, but I think Georgia has put themselves in a perfect spot to compete.
