#4: Rex Robinson

Rex Robinson is No. 4 on this list and kicked for the Bulldogs from 1977 to 1980. He is hands down one of the greatest kickers to ever come through Georgia and was one of the heroes on the 1980 national title team.

Robinson made 101 consecutive PAT’s during his career. According to UGASports and Georgia Historian Patrick Garbin, those 101 made PAT’s were quite notable especially during that time period.

Garbin notes that PAT attempts were not automatic as most teams decided to go for two back then.

Robinson received all-conference honors three straight seasons as he was on all-conference in 1978,1979 and 1980. He is one of eight Georgia players to hold that honor.

He is most known for his senior year, the one when Georgia won it all. Robinson’s known for the kick in the 1981 Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame. According to Dave McMahon, a Georgia football historian, it was essentially a 59-yard onside kick.

McMahon describes the play as happening early in the game with Georgia and Notre Dame tied at 3. Robinson kicked a routine kickoff that Notre Dame somehow dropped at their own five-yard line. The Fighting Irish attempted a field goal but missed it and Georgia recovered, and took over on the one-yard line.

We all know how the game ends with Georgia winning 17-10, but Robinson’s kick set up one of the scoring drives that led to the win.

Robinson still holds some Georgia kicking records. He is No. 4 in career PAT percentage with a 99 completion rate. His 101 consecutive PAT’s are still in the top five as he ranks No. 5 on that list.

He made 56 career field goals which is No. 6 on the career field goals made list. Robinson is tied with three other kickers at No. 1 on field goals attempted in one game with the six he attempted against Georgia Tech in 1979. He made 3-of-6 that game.

Robinson’s 84 attempted field goals still ranks in the top-5 at Georgia and ties with Marshall Morgan. He made 88.24 percent of his field goals in 1978 which is No. 4 on the single-season field goal percentage record.

He is No. 8 with 269 career points and ties with two other kickers at No. 3 on the most career 50+ field goals with six of them. His longest field goal was for 57-yards and he did it twice in 1980 against South Carolina and Georgia Tech.

The kicker who helped the Dawgs win it all deserves to be on the list and Robinson is one of the greatest. I  wouldn’t usually write out all of the records he holds, but the fact that it’s been over 30 years and he still sits on some of them is baffling and proves how good he was on the field.
