Georgia Baseball: Things are beginning to click for Aaron Schunk as a pro
By Eric Taylor
Georgia baseball put some talent into the majors in the 2019 MLB draft. One of the most talented guys to go was Aaron Schunk.
Aaron Schunk is a former 3rd baseman for the Georgia baseball team and one of the most decorated guys on the team, especially after this past season. The senior pitched and played third base for the Dawgs.
He was selected in the second round (#62 overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. At Georgia Schunk had a .312 average with 19 HRs, and 114 RBI. Shortly after signing with the Rockies he was fast-tracked straight to their A affiliate the Boise Hawks.
According to Jay Trust’s tweet, Schunk got off to a rough start as a pro, but has since turned it around:
Even though he struggled early, he has only struck out five times in his 50 minor league at-bats. In his last four games, Schunk has four extra-base hits, 2 HRs, a double, and a triple.
He is on fire, batting .400, with six hits, four runs, two dingers, one 2B, one 3B, and 6 RBI. This is also not the first time Schunk has started slow and then exploded.
In his freshman year, Schunk batted just .178 after his first 13 games. In his first 45 at-bats, he got eight hits, one double, one triple, one walk, and struck out nine times. In his last 27 games, he batted .386 with 11 RBI, five doubles, one home run, three walks, and 15 strikeouts.
His sophomore year was a lot more consistent. He got off to a little bit of a slow start, but it only lasted six games. He ended up hitting .299, with 46 runs, 72 hits, 38 RBI, 12 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 11 walks, and 28 strikeouts.
He started his junior season red hot. In his very first game, he went two for four for a .500 average. He would end the season hitting .339, with 49 runs, 78 hits, 58 RBI, 12 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 14 walks, and 29 strikeouts.
The longer he plays the better he gets. Schunk is a student of the game that loves baseball so much. As long as he keeps working hard, he should have a long career.
Hopefully, Schunk can keep hitting like he is in Boise and finish the season out strong. If his college career is any indication for how Schunk will be as a pro, I would say that he is about to go on a tear.
It seems like every season Schunk plays he gets better and better. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up at the MLB in a very short time.
