Could Emmitt Smith IV commit to Georgia football?
Could the son of Florida’s greatest running back wear red and black in Jacksonville? Don’t bet against it, not yet.
What would a Georgia football commitment by the son of Florida legend Emmitt Smith do for the Dawg Nation?
Better yet, what would a Georgia football commitment by the son of Florida legend Emmitt Smith do to the Gator Nation.
Although unlikely that EJ Smith – Emmitt Smith IV – commits to the Red and Black, the possible annoyance to the Gators is a delightful thought.
Back in Jax in red and black?
With the family connection, the Gators appeared the front-runners for EJ Smith’s signature. Not so fast. The Gators can’t get hung up on the legacy. Rheagan Smith, Emmitt Smith’s daughter, has already said thanks but no thanks to the Gators, choosing instead Texas A&M. She appeared in 20 games for the Aggies last season as a sophomore.
EJ Smith said this about his legacy status to Damon Sayles of 247sports.com “My dad’s always open to whatever school I go to. My family will always be there. Not everyone in my family went to Florida, so I’m just try to make my own decisions.”
Dawgs and Gators behind
EJ Smith is trending away from both Florida and Georgia, but the Dawgs and Gators both made his final-five along with current favorite Stanford. In-state Texas A&M, just a couple of hours down the road from Smith’s home in Dallas, less with a Texas Highway Patrol escort, is trending up.
Recruiting is a tough business. Smith is the number four ranked all-purpose back in his class, but Texas A&M is loaded with similar talents and has a leg up in the chase for the Daniyel Ngata, the national number-two ranked all-purpose back.
The Aggies may not be the best match for the son of the greatest non-quarterback in Florida football history, leaving an opening for the Dawgs and Gators.
Dan Mullen’s Georgia football problem.
“Not everyone in my family went to Florida.”
A couple of months ago, Florida head football coach Dan Mullen stoked the Florida-Georgia football rivalry. Mullen was no doubt playing to his Gator Nation base, but the Gator Nation might be happier if he played more to his recruiting base – Florida high schools. The Dawgs responded to Mullen’s bold chatter by claiming five four-star commitments out of the Sunshine State, one less than the Gators.
Kirby Smart made his Sunshine State strategy clear when he elevated to offensive coordinator former Miami, FSU and Miami Dolphins coach and Miami high school star James Coley, then hired Charlton Warren off the Florida staff and Todd Hartley off the Miami staff.
He’s a Texan, but EJ Smith would be a diamond on top of Kirby Smart’s Florida heist and a fat wad of bubble gum in Dan Mullen’s mullet.
