Georgia football’s starting quarterback Jake Fromm will be a junior this football season, and after two already impressive seasons, 2019 could be a step up because there will not be any distractions.

Georgia football’s quarterback Jake Fromm has run off two 5-star quarterbacks in two years. He sent Jacob Eason packing back to Washington after his freshman season and Justin Fields left after last year.

While there has been a ton of discussion about Fields leaving and how it’s going to sting this season to not have him, I beg to differ.

For the first time in two seasons, Fromm doesn’t have to worry about losing his job. Granted Stetson Bennett is one hell of a player and will keep Fromm on his toes; I think that’ll only make him better. The Dawgs also have D’Wan Mathis who came in with the 2019 class.

However, these guys know that Fromm is ‘the guy’ and their turn will come.

More from Dawn of the Dawg

For the most part, Fromm has been incredible, in his first two seasons he’s completed 387-of-597 passes for 5,364 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

With numbers like that, it’s evident that Fromm’s won the starting job and it’s his to keep until someone outworks him or does better.

Right now, I don’t think either one will happen because Fromm is one of the best when it comes to working hard.

He’s a student of the game and competition makes him better.

However, not to take away anything from Fromm last year, but I feel like he didn’t have to work as hard because guys like Justin Fields wanted reps with the first team as well.

While that was somewhat the case the year before, Eason got hurt and came back during the Tennessee week. Even when he came back, Fromm kept his starting spot. Fromm stayed crisp outside the Auburn game.

However, last year felt different. Fromm secured his spot, but at the same time Fields deserved to get some reps with first team as well.

I may be stretching it when I say this was a distraction, but I believe it was. When would Fields come in, put in Fields because Fromm struggled against LSU, there are many more statements that I heard last year. I probably even made some, especially at the LSU game, but we all said it.

However, when we did say it, the next week Fromm would light it up and be back to his normal self. While I feel like he progressed last season, it wasn’t as much as I hoped.

I felt like Fields was a distraction and not a team player. He wanted the starting job, because everyone wants that starting job, but at the same time I feel like he should have stepped back and learned from Fromm. Like learning how to be a leader, a better quarterback in the film room, and a better overall football player.

Instead, as the season progressed and Fields wasn’t getting much time on the field, the tension changed surrounding the quarterbacks. Then Fields announced that he would transfer after the season, and that’s when I think the quarterback room went sour.

I get wanting to go play and get on the field, but at the same time, if your quarterback room is off, I feel like it puts the entire team out of whack. Then the terrible, and I mean terrible call in the SEC Championship game that made Fields look like chopped meat, something was way off in that room.

I’m not sure exactly what was off, but it affected Fromm. In 2017, he constantly had someone competing and making him do a better job. While you would think Fields would do the same, I didn’t get that same feeling as I did when he was going up against Eason and I would even say Bennett.

Now heading into his junior season at Georgia, theres a familiar face in the quarterback room and if anyone is going to make Fromm compete his tail off it’s Bennett. He helped the defense so much in 2017 get ready for Oklahoma, the Mail Man made a name for himself.

Georgia got a steal with getting him back from JUCO.

But Fromm knows how good Bennett is and that he will outwork him if he lets that happen. However, with Fields gone I think we see the Fromm of 2017 that was a work horse.  I think that Fromm knows its his offense and he doesn’t have to worry about losing it to anyone, but at the same time knows if he gets complacent, Bennett will be right there on his heels.

Bennett knows he won’t be the starter at Georgia unless something drastic happens, and I believe he’s okay with that. At the same time he knows Fromm and I think he will be what elevates Fromm’s game to the next level.

Georgia’s starting quarterback is already on some Heisman and preseason watch lists, as he should be. However, I think the general shocks some people. Fromm has complete command of this offense and they’re 100 percent behind him.

He could have a special season for the Dawgs, and I’m excited to see it unfold.
