Lee Hunter is key to Georgia football catching Alabama
Georgia football is still chasing Alabama, and it will be until it can recruit elite defensive lineman just as it recruits for every other position.
For Georgia football to claim a spot next to Alabama at the top of the national heap, the Dawgs have to beat Alabama – and Clemson and, yes, South Carolina – for elite defensive lineman. Just like the last two Dawg – Tide meetings on the field, Georgia has come up short in its chase for front line defenders
Hunter in the house
Big Lee Hunter of Blount High School in Alabama is the latest object of Georgia’s defensive line obsession. The 6’5” 265 pound defensive tackle is one of the four five-star defensive tackles in the class of 2021.
Hunter will visit the Georgia campus for a part of this weekend. He’s projected as a future Auburn Tiger, and Kirby Smart needs to swing him to Georgia.
The Palmetto State races past Georgia football
Clemson has the top two defensive tackles for 2020 committed, the only five-star defensive tackles in the class, and three of the top six. Alabama has three of the top 26. Georgia claims the number eight defensive tackle in the class, Jalen Carter, and number 24, Nazir Stackouse.
About those Gamecocks, they have the number 18 defensive tackle for 2020 committed, Alex Huntley from Columbia.
But wait, there’s more.
The Gamecocks signed the number one and number 14 defensive tackles in the class of 2019. Georgia signed the number three and number 31 ranked defensive tackles in Travon Walker and Tymon Mitchell. Alabama claimed defensive tackles ranked five, eight, and 18.
Dawg opportunity
In 2018, South Carolina picked up the number 14 and Alabama the number 16 defensive tackle. The Dawgs have not only failed to catch SEC bully Alabama in the big ugly defender race, with the Gamecocks chasing in-state rival Clemson, both eastern neighbors are now ahead of the Dawgs.
Kirby Smart and the Georgia staff have to turn defensive line recruiting in Georgia’s favor, and with the 2020 class nearly in the books, the next opportunity is with Lee Hunter in the class of 2021.
