Georgia football opens up the 2019 football season on the road for a night game against Vanderbilt. We take a look at the matchup and give a prediction on the game.

The first game of the 2019 season for Georgia football happens to be on Aug. 31 against the Vanderbilt Commodores with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.

Georgia gets to open the season up during Labor Day weekend in Nashville with a night game. It’s like a perfect storm.

Fans are buzzing for this game, and it seems like the plan is to present that same red sea that made an appearance at the 2017 Notre Dame game.

About the Matchup:

Georgia leads the record with Vanderbilt 57-20-2 and holds a 7-2 record over Vandy since 2010. The last time Vanderbilt defeated Georgia was in 2016 when the Commodores won in Athens 17-16.

Vanderbilt’s other win over the Dawgs since 2010 came in 2013 when the Commodores defeated Georgia 31-27.

Quick Preview

Head coach Kirby Smart is heading into his fourth season while Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason is in his fifth year.

Last year, Vanderbilt and Georgia faced off with each other on Oct. 6 in a night game between the Hedges. The Dawgs won 41-13 and handled the Commodores easily.

Georgia rushed for 219 yards compared to Vanderbilts 138. The Dawgs also racked up 341 yards through the air while Vanderbilt had 183. Georgia mustered up 560 yards of an offense averaging 8.6 yards a play.

Vanderbilt found a way to run on the Dawgs for a short period with Ke’Shawn Vaughn toting it nine times for 79 yards. However, before long Georgia’s depth took over and shut down the Commodores offense.

Looking at the 2019 matchup, I believe that it could end close to how last years game did.

Vanderbilt lost starting quarterback Kyle Shurmur so they’ll have a brand new guy taking snaps. Georgia returns three-year starter, Jake Fromm along with most of its offense and a good chunk of its defense.

There is such a huge talent gap between Georgia and Vanderbilt right now that the Dawgs should handle this game with ease. However, the Dawgs cannot overlook Vandy because if anyone can slip up and get a win, it’ll be Vanderbilt.

Georgia needs to play its game, shut down Vaughn and force the new quarterback to make throws. I fully expect Dawg Nation to be there with that gorgeous red sea making Nashville their home away from home.

The Dawgs take this one home with ease if it sticks to the game plan and doesn’t get cute with Vandy. I believe Georgia beat Vanderbilt 42-10 and goes 1-0 heading into a three-game home stretch.

Georgia’s 2019 season can be extraordinary if the Dawgs can take it game by game and stay healthy. If the Dawgs handle Vanderbilt like I think they will, it’ll be a good sign as to what’s coming later in the season.
