Three Things Georgia Football’s Offense needs to do against Vandy

Georgia football takes on Vanderbilt today, and here are three things the offense needs to do to be successful in Music City.

The countdown to game day for Georgia football is officially over and to make sure things get off to a great start here are three things I would like to see the Bulldog offense do against Vandy.

If you take a look at Georgia’s offense on paper, it appears they have every offensive intangible to be a very successful team at scoring the ball.

Their offensive line is one of the best in the country; quarterback plays at an elite level, a stable of running backs who play a high level of ball, and wide receivers who have all the potential in the world.

With a high power offense like Dawgs has I would like to see Coach Coley and his unit do these three things on Saturday.

For starters, pound the rock. D’Andre Swift, by many, is considered the best back in the country and for a good reason.

Last season, while also sharing the ball with star back Elijah Holyfield posted 1,049 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per carry.

Swift’s ability to plant his foot, change direction, and explode with game-breaking speed is tough to come by, so Georgia needs to take advantage of that while he is around.

Even behind Swift though, senior Brian Herrien, Sophomore James Cook, and RS Freshman Zamir White are ready to get in on the action and gash the defense for big yards. Swift is for sure the go-to guy, but they don’t have to rely on him to do all of the heavy lifting.

Establishing a running game early in a game allows for more creativity on offense and for guys like Jake Fromm to settle in and make the throws that give Georgia the ability to extend their lead.

Swift isn’t a pre-season Heisman candidate for nothing, and the bread and butter to the offensive game plan needs to stick with getting our backs the touches they deserve.

Not to mention running behind our offensive line should be like a hot knife running through butter.

The second thing I want to see is Fromm spreading the love to receivers.

I think this is going to be a key component for this entire season, especially. A lot of young guys make up the majority of the receiving core, which also means playing time is up for grabs.

Now, of course, Coley is going to have his guys who he gives the title of “starting receiver,” which at the moment I believe is Tyler Simmons, Demetris Robertson, and Matt Landers. Early on in the season though those spots are a lot more likely to change.

Georgia doesn’t need receivers to put up ridiculous numbers we playoff need them to be consistent and make crucial catches to keep drives alive or keep the ball rolling.

In the first game of the year, getting guys that you feel comfortable playing receptions is key to figuring out who can be trusted running routes and also blocking when needed to.

Distributing the ball to multiple receivers is also going to keep competition at the position hot and not allow a single guy on the depth chart take a play off.

I do not think that the receiver play for the Dawgs is going to be as a big of a weak point as many are expecting.

Georgia has a perfect mix of go up and get it type of players and those that have solid intangibles mixed in with speed that can leave a secondary in the dust.

With so many players having the opportunity to get playing time I think spreading the ball around the field will allow Fromm to settle in with some new faces and really kick start Georgia’s passing game for the remainder of the season.

The third and final thing I want to see is a complete game from our offense.

We all know the saying of Georgia can’t play a complete game on the big stage. Well if we are going to play in Atlanta come December like we are expected then establishing starts with doing it against teams like Vandy.

I am not saying that Kirby needs to run up the score, but more of playing every down like the game depends on it and making sure players stay locked in.

No matter if the score is 42-7 or 0-0, every guy lined up for the snap must be focused on doing their job and doing it until the whistle is blown.

Practicing good habits makes it routine, and that should be a focus for not just the offense but the defense as well.

Our road to the national championship starts with Vandy, and there is an excellent opportunity for the Dawgs to set the tone for 2019 and prove to everyone this is a legit team who is one of the best in the nation and can go toe to toe with anyone who lines up in front of us.

Bring it on Dawg nation, because it is go time for the University of Georgia!
