Vince Dooley’s top five Georgia football upsets
Number 2: 1965 Michigan
After defeating Alabama in year two, Dooley’s Dogs traveled north to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face the Michigan Wolverines in the Big House. No one expected Georgia to do anything but pickup their travel check and hurry home with a loss.
History changing penalty
The game opened as expected, with the massive Michigan offense easily shoving back the slight Bulldog defenders to reach the end zone.
Not so fast.
A penalty was flag spotted after the apparent opening drive touchdown and gave the Georgia defense a successful do-over. Georgia collected a couple of Bobby Etter field goals, and trailing by a point in the fourth quarter, the Dogs found themselves in position to take the lead with another Etter kick. But Dooley, as he did throughout his career, sought bigger game. Quarterback Preston Ridlehuber rolled out and threw a strike to Georgia end Pat Hodgson in the end zone, and Georgia came home winners.
Georgia went on to a 6-4 record, including a second straight win over Tech.
