Georgia football and Notre Dame face off on the field for the third time ever on Saturday. This showdown is what college football is all about and will be the matchup of the year, regardless.
This highly anticipated matchup between the Irish and Georgia football has been building up for years.
Two teams, who are fighting for a playoff spot, will clash between the hedges in hopes of earning respect, pride, and bragging rights for years to come.
So let’s take a look at how these teams got here.
For Dawg fans, this will be a stroll right down memory lane. A trip back to the year 1980.
The college football world was about to be taken by storm by a man named Herschel Walker. One of, if not, the greatest and most dominant college football player of all-time.

After Herschel led the Dawgs to a historical season, ends would meet in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The 10-1 Dawgs matched up against the 9-0-1 Irish for the 1981 Sugar Bowl National title game.
The two teams had never played each other before, so this game would set the tone for the feelings and emotions that the opposing team felt for the other.
Walker ran for 150 yards and 2 TDs which also gained him the honors as the Sugar Bowl MVP. Not to mention he did all of this after dislocating his shoulder earlier in the game. Talk about a DGD.
This immaculate victory for Georgia eventually led to the year 2017, where the two teams would finally meet again to have a second go at things.
It had been over 30 years since the two had met and now they get to re-decide who deserves bragging rights finally.
This game needed no storyline to help build the hype around the game, but one was surely provided.
A young man by the name of Jake Fromm, who took over as the starter after Jacob Eason went down on an injury, would be getting his first road start in South bend. The rest is history.
Georgia would grind its way to victory thanks to ample support from their stud defense and a late forced fumble off a sack forced by Davin Bellamy.
Two years later, a game of what will be the greatest matchup of the entire 2019 college football season will be played in the city of Athens.
A lot has changed, but at the same time, a lot has stayed the same.
Both Kirby Smart and Brian Kelly were both the head coaches of each program in the 2017 matchup and will be again this Saturday.
Both teams are also ranked and in discussion to taking a spot in the college football playoff as they both were two seasons ago.
Jake Fromm will once again be leading his Dawgs into a fight against the Irish as he did in 2017, the only difference being is this time he won’t be an inexperienced freshman.
There will also be a sea of red much like there was up north two years ago though this time Dawg Nation’s home-field advantage will be in full effect.
If the history behind these teams wasn’t big enough then adding College Gameday and the game being played at night should add some extra juice to the throwdown.
A matchup that dates back to 1980 has now led us to the year 2019 and after 39 years still not much has changed. Two top tier programs then and now will make for the ultimate college football game on Saturday.
If your day of college football doesn’t consist of watching this game, then you might as well turn your gear in because it doesn’t get any better than this one will.
