2012 – Jarvis Jones versus Florida

Finally, the Gators make our list! In 2012, Florida was ranked No. 2 in the country, and Georgia was No. 10. The Cocktail Party was set up to be a classic, and it didn’t disappoint!

Georgia entered the weekend in a three-game defensive slump. They had wins against Tennessee 51-44 and Kentucky 29-24 but had a brutal loss to South Carolina 35-7. There was a severe identity crisis going on.

Leading up to the game, Safety Shawn Williams created a little controversy by calling out his teammates on the defensive side of the ball. The term he used was “soft.” While he wasn’t totally wrong, it didn’t sit well with the team either.

Whether they liked what Williams had to say or not, it must have affected. Georgia created six turnovers that Saturday with two interceptions and four forced fumbles.

The biggest turnover came in the final two minutes and was the difference in the game. With Florida down 17-9, they had the ball in the red zone on 2nd and 6. I remember having a sinking feeling that we were faltering at the exact wrong time. Remember, we had given up 73 points over the previous three games.

But this time, the Dawgs defense would stand tall. Jeff Driskel hit the Gators’ leading receiver, Tight End Jordan Reed, on a short stop route. He turned upfield and eluded an Alex Ogletree tackle.

Reed rumbled to the five and tried to leap a Georgia defender. That’s when Jarvis Jones hit Reed from behind and forced a loose ball. The ball shot into the end zone, and Georgia safety, Sanders Commings, jumped on the fumble.

The Florida crowd was stunned. The Georgia crowd was elated. That hit from Jones gave the Bulldogs a much-needed win over No. 2 Florida and helped springboard them into the SEC Championship. I also aged 10 years during that game.
